Life Before the Military

Later in my childhood, I moved in with my aunt and uncle, who provided me with greater educational opportunities. That experience broadened my perspective and reinforced the importance of education, perseverance, and the support of family in achieving personal growth.

Dr. Phillips High School

High School Student

I was in the magnet program with Visual Performing Arts as part of the TV Production class. We were responsible for providing the students with the morning news televised in a closed-circuit program within the school. We also teamed with directors and producers from Universal to come up with a short film called "Hearts in a Blender." Our short film was featured at Universal Cinemark at CityWalk.

During my junior and senior years of high school, I began working as a seasonal employee at Universal Studios, where I was assigned to the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man attraction. What started as a seasonal opportunity grew into a rewarding 10-year career. Throughout my time there, I developed a strong foundation in ride and show operations while gaining valuable experience in customer service, teamwork, and safety management.

My responsibilities included:

Operating amusement park rides and attractions safely and efficiently.
Ensuring guest safety by enforcing ride policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
Assisting guests with boarding and exiting attractions while providing a welcoming and enjoyable experience.
Performing routine ride inspections and reporting maintenance or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel.
Delivering exceptional customer service by answering questions, resolving concerns, and creating positive guest interactions.
Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of attraction areas.
Adhering to all company safety standards, operational procedures, and emergency protocols.

This experience taught me the importance of accountability, communication, and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment, while reinforcing my commitment to providing exceptional service and maintaining the highest safety standards.

Born in the middle of the summer and raised in sunny Miami, Florida, I spent most of my childhood surrounded by my mother, siblings, and grandparents. Family has always been at the center of my life, and their love and support helped shape who I am today.

When I was six years old, my mother became a single parent. Despite the challenges, she worked tirelessly to raise my brother, my sister, and me. She faced additional responsibilities while caring for children with serious health conditions, including cardiac issues and a heightened risk of strokes. Her strength, determination, and resilience continue to inspire me.

My Military Experience

As an Army 94T Avenger System Repairer, I received specialized technical training in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the Avenger Air Defense Weapon System and its associated electronic and mechanical components. My training included AC and DC circuits, resonance circuits, transistors, soldering, symbolic logic, and microprocessor systems.

I developed the skills to inspect, test, calibrate, and adjust electronic equipment to precise specifications using specialized diagnostic and test equipment. Training also covered identifying and correcting faults in electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and cryogenic assemblies, subassemblies, modules, and circuit components. In addition, I learned equipment repair procedures, preventive maintenance, serviceability inspections, safety protocols, and proper disposition of unserviceable components to ensure mission readiness and operational reliability.

As an Army 14G Air Defense Battle Management System Operator, I was responsible for supporting air defense operations by providing real-time situational awareness, managing airspace, and coordinating battlefield information to protect friendly forces.

Key responsibilities included:

Monitoring and maintaining situational awareness of the airspace by tracking and reporting airborne threats and friendly aircraft operations.
Planning, coordinating, and executing airspace management operations in support of assigned units and mission objectives.
Operating, maintaining, and performing preventive maintenance on Air Defense Airspace Management (ADAM) cell equipment, including system emplacement, march order preparation, and equipment readiness.
Evaluating intelligence and operational data to support force protection, target engagement decisions, and air defense mission planning.
Coordinating with supported units to ensure effective communication, airspace deconfliction, and integration of air defense operations.
Maintaining operational readiness by adhering to Army standards, technical procedures, and mission requirements.

As an Army 91B Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, I was responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of military wheeled vehicles and associated systems to ensure operational readiness and mission success.

Key responsibilities included:

Troubleshooting military wheeled vehicles to the component level, identifying and isolating the root causes of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and powertrain malfunctions.
Interpreting complex technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematic drawings to diagnose equipment issues and perform accurate repairs.
Conducting preventive maintenance services, inspections, and corrective maintenance in accordance with Army standards and technical manuals.
Repairing and replacing vehicle components, including engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, braking, and electrical systems.
Performing operational and administrative duties, including documenting maintenance actions, managing work orders, maintaining equipment records, and ensuring compliance with Army maintenance and safety procedures.

As a National Guard AGR Supply Sergeant, I oversee the management and distribution of essential supplies, equipment, and resources for military operations. My responsibilities include ensuring that all gear is properly accounted for, maintained, and ready for deployment. I work closely with unit leaders to assess supply needs, manage inventory, and coordinate logistics to support training and missions. Additionally, I provide training to soldiers on supply procedures and best practices, ensuring that our team is always prepared and equipped for any situation.

Combat Tour

From September 2005 to November 2006, I deployed to Abu Ghraib, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Army National Guard. During my deployment, I served in several mission-critical roles that strengthened my leadership, decision-making, and operational skills. As a Team Leader for convoy operations, I was responsible for ensuring the safe movement of personnel and mission-essential assets throughout the area of operations. I also supported base defense as a Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor (JLENS) operator, where I monitored surveillance systems and provided timely threat notifications to the Battle Captain to enhance force protection and situational awareness. In addition, I supervised the safety, security, and accountability of prisoners and detainees within military confinement facilities, maintaining order, enforcing military regulations, and ensuring the humane treatment of individuals in custody. These experiences reinforced my commitment to teamwork, accountability, and performing effectively under pressure in demanding environments.
